Excellent plans for pedestrian, cycling and bus flow improvements have been made by Transport for London in close coordination with the London Boroughs of Hounslow and Hammersmith and Fulham.

Transport for London’s plan for Cycle Superhighway CS9 is set to deliver protected bike lanes from beyond Chiswick, along King Street and on towards central London. Many more residents will be able to cycle to work and the shops.

Unfortunately, it is now clear that Hammersmith and Fulham Council want the cycle route to run along the A4  – a hostile, traffic dominated street that is inappropriate for most employees who would like to bike to work.

This will put off many employees from every using a bike and will disproportionately impact female employees.

The public consultation on this route has already taken place and changes of this magnitude would set the project back by several years and may even lead to TfL spending this money elsewhere in the city.

Leading local employers are asking Hammersmith and Fulham Council to support protected bike tracks on King Street so that employees can get to work safely, quickly and efficiently

What you can do:

1)  Speak to other employees who cycle to work.  Together ask someone empowered to speak for your organisation to show your support for these plans. (A  Managing Director, Partner, CEO,  Director will usually be able to do this.)

2) Use one of the templates below as a starting point for your letter to Hammersmith & Fulham Council.

3) When you are done, send it to Cllr Wesley Harcourt (wesley.harcourt@lbhf.gov.uk  and critically please cc us at Hammersmith@cyclingworks.org.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact us directly via Hammersmith@cyclingworks.org.

Subject: FOR CONSIDERATION – Proposals for CS9 along King Street

Body: Dear Cllr Harcourt,

[INSERT business name] is a leading  [INSERT type of business] based in  [INSERT area ].  We provide [INSERT service] and have been based in London for over [INSERT age] years.

Like many businesses in London, a growing number of our [INSERT headcount] employees cycle to work. More of us would cycle if we felt comfortable and safe on the roads.

We value employee safety and we want to promote active lifestyles for all our employees. We support their freedom to choose how they get to work. We also note strong evidence that more cycling increases spending in local retail businesses and lowers air pollution levels.

The protected cycle lanes along King Street will help us attract and retain the employees our business needs to thrive. They will also make London a more attractive city in which to build and run our business.

CS9 is, on balance,  great for our business and for the borough.  Please make sure these plans are delivered, without delay.

Kind regards,
