Excellent plans for pedestrian, cycling and bus flow improvements have been made by Transport for London in close coordination with the London Boroughs of Hounslow and Hammersmith and Fulham.
The plans deliver many pedestrian improvements and protected bike lanes from beyond Chiswick, along King Street and on towards central London. Many more residents will be able to cycle to the shops, school and work.
Unfortunately, it is now clear that Hammersmith and Fulham Council are trying to block the plan by asking that the route runs along the A4 – a hostile, traffic dominated street that is inappropriate for most employees. This will put off most employees from ever using a bike to get to work, will stop local residents shopping by bike and will disproportionately impact female employees and residents.
The public consultation on this route has already taken place, changes of this magnitude would set the project back by several years and may even lead to TfL spending this money elsewhere in the city.
We need local employers to ask Hammersmith and Fulham Council to support protected bike tracks on King Street so that employees can get to work safely, quickly and efficiently
What you can do:
1) Speak to other employees who cycle to work. Together ask someone empowered to speak for your organisation to show your support for these plans. (A Managing Director, Partner, CEO, Director will usually be able to do this.)
2) Use one of the templates below as a starting point for your letter to Hammersmith & Fulham Council.
3) When you are done, send it to Cllr Wesley Harcourt (firstname.lastname@example.org and critically please cc us at Hammersmith@cyclingworks.org. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us directly via Hammersmith@cyclingworks.org.

Subject: FOR CONSIDERATION – Proposals for CS9 along King Street
Body: Dear Cllr Harcourt,
[INSERT business name] is a leading [INSERT type of business] based in [INSERT area ]. We provide [INSERT service] and have been based in London for over [INSERT age] years.
Like many businesses in London, a growing number of our [INSERT headcount] employees cycle to work. An even larger proportion of our team would cycle to the office if they felt comfortable and safe on the roads.
We value their safety and we want to promote active lifestyles for all our employees. We support their freedom to choose how they get to work and note strong evidence that cycling increases spending in local shops.
The protected lanes along King Street are a much better option that along the A4 and will help us attract employees and support local retailers. They will also make the borough a more attractive city in which to build and run our organisation.
Please make sure the CS9 plans along King Street are delivered, without delay.
